Earth's Oldest Rock Was Actually Found On The Moon

Earth's Oldest Rock Was Actually Found On The Moon

Incredibly, it's now amongst the oldest terrestrial rocks known to exist. After its arrival, the rock got mixed in with other lunar surface materials into one sample. The impact probably melted the fragment, buried by another collision almost 3.9 billion years ago and uncovered by another impact 26 million years ago. Finally, Apollo 14 astronauts found the rock and reunited it with mother Earth. Sample 14321 is special in that it's a clast-rich, crystalline matrix breccia.

The fragment endured further trauma on the moon's surface.

"The sample has been described as a "treasure trove", containing a multitude of clasts of rocks". For us, he will thus cover climate, environment, and science news, among others.

This a sharp upturn from the number of asteroids hitting the planet when dinosaurs roamed the Earth.

The researchers, led by Jeremy Bellucci and Alexander Nemchin at the Swedish Museum of Natural History and Curtin University in Australia respectively, concede that the rock may have formed on the moon, but argue that this would have required conditions not previously seen in lunar samples.

The example might not be of the terrestrial source, that could be a chance, but yet instead crystallized on the Moon.

That would, however, require the sample to have formed at tremendous depths, in the lunar mantle, where very different rock compositions are anticipated and in the reducing and higher temperature conditions characteristic of the Moon. That rock is the oldest known rock to originate from the Earth, dating back to approximately four billion years. The impact as so powerful that it threw the rock from our world, through space, directly on the Moon. Back during the Hadean, asteroids regularly produced craters thousands of kilometres in diameter.

"For that reason it provides a neat achieve of impacts, as it is unlike the Earth, which is affected by erosion and plate tectonics that disturb impact craters".

This rock fragment is over 4 billion years old.

Scientists discover what may be Earth's oldest rock in a lunar sample returned by the Apollo 14 astronauts.

The Earth is old, extremely old. But Day said the researchers missed a third possibility.

Yes, this supposed moon rock is actually an Earth rock. The felsite clasts, he said, are just about the right age for "some of the earliest recorded large impacts on the Moon, making a lunar origin more likely". It was found on the moon.

"It is an extraordinary find that helps pain a better".

Despite Day's reservations, he said the new study is important in that it highlights the need for future missions to study the formation of the Moon. The Apollo missions brought back a whole lot of rock samples, and scientists have been methodically analyzing them ever since.

One of the scientists involved in the study has exclusively explained how they calculated the collision increase.
