Several patients at Mater Dei Hospital are believed to be suffering from the highly contagious Swine flu, according to media reports.

He said teams of the Health Department visited the patients and 435 close contacts of these cases were also treated free of cost. There have not been any flu outbreaks at long-term care facilities yet this season.

The ministry says the outbreak is worsening in most of Japan's prefectures, and warns that more people are bound to fall ill in the coming weeks.

On average, between 60 and 120 deaths are recorded during the flu season. In the previous flu season, 48 people died from flu-related causes in North Carolina by this time past year.

The state now has eight recorded deaths related to the flu.

A total of 19 flu-associated child deaths have been reported and more than 3,500 have been hospitalized for influenza this winter in the United States.

According to an influenza update released by WHO on 7 January, the vast majority of influenza viruses tested in laboratories around the world were of type A. Furthermore, WHO said that up to 77% of influenza type A viruses were of the H1N1 sub-type.

This influenza has been prominent this year and is known as the H1N1 virus or swine flu which, in previous years, had taken a toll on the country.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urges all people age 6 months or older to get flu vaccinations.
