Huawei sacks Polish worker arrested over claims of spying

Huawei sacks Polish worker arrested over claims of spying

Huawei said on January 12th that Wang's alleged actions aren't related to Huawei and that he brought the company "into disrepute".

Why are there concerns about Huawei?

Counterintelligence officers also collected physical documents and electronic data from the local offices of Huawei and telecom provider Orange. A government spokesman identified the suspect as Weijing W.; media reports in Poland and China say he's also known as Stanislaw Wang, Huawei's sales director in Poland.

"One thing is clear: this is another nail in the coffin of Huawei's European ambitions", said Thorsten Benner, director of the Global Public Policy Institute, a think tank.

Beijing is "deeply concerned" over the arrest of a Chinese citizen in Poland on allegations of espionage, the country's Foreign Ministry said in a statement obtained by Sputnik. Further indictments are expected, he said.

Police searched both of the suspects' homes as they arrested the pair on Tuesday. They'll both remain in custody for at least three months.

A LinkedIn profile for Mr Wang showed he has worked for Huawei's Polish division since 2011 and previously served as attache to the Chinese General Consul in Gdansk from 2006-2011.

Oddly, Huawei, once a customer of Qualcomm, was one of the star witnesses for the FTC in their suit against Qualcomm which alleges that the USA company is threatening to withhold chips to customers unless they pay unreasonably high licensing fees. The resume said he received a bachelor's degree in 2004 from the Beijing University of Foreign Studies.

The Chinese telecommunications equipment maker Huawei says it has sacked an employee arrested in Poland on spying charges.

He had access to key information, including the functioning of SŁR, the Polish Government Communication Network which essentially allows secret transmission of information to high-ranking state officials.

Wang's arrest is the latest setback for Huawei.

Orange Polska said it handed over one employee's belongings to authorities.

Zaryn told The Associated Press that prosecutors have charged the two men with espionage, but that agents are continuing to collect evidence and interview witnesses, including sorting through what was seized earlier this week.

Mr. Bradley would not discuss the reasons for his departure when contacted by The Globe and Mail on Friday but Huawei released a statement saying he had played a crucial role in building the Chinese telecom's brand in Canada and outreach to governments.

Huawei in December said it expects to see a 21 percent rise in revenue for 2018 despite what it called "unfair treatment" around the world.

Nevertheless, tensions have recently increased between Canada and China over the arrest of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou in Vancouver and the detention of two Canadians in China, which some speculate was done in response to Meng's arrest.
