Hypertension drug recalled after traces of probable carcinogen found

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has expanded its list of recalled drugs commonly used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure because they contain a possible cancer-causing agent.

Consumers with medical questions about the recalled medication can contact Torrent at 1-800-912-9561 from 8 a.m.to 5 p.m. EST.

The Food and Drug Administration as officially announced that Aurobindo Pharma USA, Inc. has chose to voluntarily recall several types of medicine.

"Patients taking the recalled valsartan-containing medicines should consult their doctor or pharmacist and continue taking their medicine until they have a replacement product", Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum of Mount Sinai in NY told CNN after a similar recall a year ago.

So far, the pharmaceutical company that issued the recall has not received any reports of adverse effects of the drugs, FDA officials said. It is also used to treat kidney disease in patients with diabetes.

Torrent is urging patients that take the recalled blood pressure medication to continue taking it as prescribed as the risk of stopping it without alternative treatment could cause greater harm.

If a person immediately stops taking the medication without finding out a suitable alternative, he/she might come across a life and death scenario. The product can be identified by checking the product name, manufacturer details and batch or lot number on the bottle containing these products. Torrent is recalling only these particular losartan potassium tablets.

The new recall includes 30-, 90- and 1,000-count bottles of 100-milligram tablets; 30-, 90- and 1,000-count bottles of 50-milligram tablets; and 90-count bottles of 25-milligram tablets, according to the FDA. No adverse symptoms have been reported until now.

The ongoing recall applies to specific angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) found to have trace amounts of the chemicals N-nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA) or N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) above the acceptable daily intake levels.
