IBM just unveiled a 'quantum computing system' for commercial use

"This new system is critical in expanding quantum computing beyond the walls of the research lab as we work to develop practical quantum applications for business and science", said Arvind Krishna, senior vice president of Hybrid Cloud and director of IBM Research.

ExxonMobil said today that it has signed a partnership agreement with IBM to advance the potential use of quantum computing in developing next-generation energy and manufacturing technologies. Rometty predicted within the next five years, businesses will start seeing the impact of quantum computing technologies.

While quantum computing is still in its infancy and is mostly just a part of books and research papers, IBM at CES 2019 unveiled the Q System One that is touted to be the world's first quantum computer for commercial use.

We reached out to IBM with a host of questions regarding the Q System - like whether IBM intends to make more than one of these systems, and what the pricing structure will be for commercial use - and Dr. The IT giant also sees future where it will be selling such systems in the form of renting access to the hardware over the internet instead of shipping the quantum computer itself.

IBM isn't aiming to bring the Q System One to the masses. The IBM Q System One ensures that these quantum computers can operate beyond the confines of a research lab.

"These organizations will work directly with IBM scientists, engineers and consultants to explore quantum computing for specific industries". So, it might not be that powerful and more optimizations would be on its way. The quantum computers, on the other hand, can have multiple superpositions of these states and hence, would be able to solve a multitude of problems very quickly. Called as "IBM Q System One", the computer has been created to employ quantum computing principles (albeit in their initial phases) and could be used by businesses and individuals for their own uses. IBM clearly thinks of the Q system as a piece of art and, indeed, the final result is quite stunning. Nevertheless, there is a plan to offer partners to the IBM Q Network programme cloud-based access to its quantum computing operations. It's no surprise then, that IBM stresses that this is a first attempt and that the systems are "designed to one day tackle problems that are now seen as too complex and exponential in nature for classical systems to handle".

This case is purpose-built to eliminate outside interference and lengthen the lifespan of quantum computing's units of information called qubits so they survive long enough to perform useful calculations without interference from external sound, vibrations, or temperature fluctuations.
