If UK Parliament rejects May's Brexit deal, what's Plan B?

The British parliament holds a historic vote Tuesday on the Brexit deal agreed with the European Union and all sides are bracing for turmoil when the text is nearly certainly rejected.

While the DUP is likely to vote against the deal, it will nearly certainly back the prime minister if a no confidence motion is brought against her in Parliament.

"The government now needs to work on a cross-party basis with Labour and other opposition parties to reach a broader agreement for a withdrawal deal and secure the transition period, protect jobs and a positive future relationship with the European Union".

May had promised assurances on the so-called Irish backstop arrangement when she postponed a vote on the agreement in December, facing certain defeat in the House of Commons.

"She can go back to Brussels now and say look this thing isn't going to fly - we need a fresh approach and one that actually gives us the ability to take advantage of the freedoms and opportunities that Brexit gives us".

The Irish government said it regretted the outcome of the vote and that it believed it increased the risk of a "disorderly Brexit".

I hear the Irish prime minister say very clearly that even in the event of a no-deal outcome, there will not be a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic.

Mrs Foster said on Twitter: 'Tonight will be historic but for the wrong reasons.

Belgium's Prime Minister Charles Michel said on Twitter his country was also stepping up its planning for a Brexit no deal.

The Sinn Fein leader has urged Irish Premier Leo Varadkar to "stand firm" over the backstop after MPs voted down the proposed withdrawal deal.

She said the history books would judge if MPs delivered on Brexit while safeguarding the economy and security.

Speculation is growing in Brussels and London that May could seek an extension to the Article 50 exit process if she loses the vote on Tuesday.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has tabled a no confidence motion in the government, which could trigger a general election.

The chamber believes the passing of the Withdrawal Agreement is the only option now available that will ensure Brexit happens in an orderly way.

What has the United Kingdom been offered on Northern Ireland?

"The Commission is committed to providing the necessary political impetus and resources to help achieving the objective of making this period as short as possible", it said.

MPs will debate that throughout most of Wednesday, with a vote taking place at 19:00 GMT.

While Alliance leader Naomi Long said the scale of the prime minister's defeat was "surprising", and said the only way forward was to have another referendum.

The UK will leave the European Union on 29 March unless there is a new act of Parliament preventing that.
