According to Palestinian figures, 640,000 Jewish settlers now live on 196 settlements (built with the Israeli government's permission) and more than 200 settler "outposts" (built without its permission) across the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Palestinians and Israelis often share roads in the West Bank, although some are reserved exclusively for Israelis.

Palestinian cartographer Khalil al-Tafakji warned Palestinian media outlets that opening the new road serves as a "prelude to displacing Palestinians from the area and starting settlement construction in the so-called E1 corridor".

But a Palestine Liberation Organisation official joined others who have called it "the first apartheid road" and voiced fears it could create a precedent.

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry said in a press statement that the new Israeli plan "undermines the credibility of the global community and the possibility to reach a political solution to the conflict".

Most users will be residents of the settlements established on land north of Jerusalem, Haaretz reported.

The new 5-kilometer Route 4370, also known as the "Easter Ring Route" is a four lane route: two lanes for Israeli settlers travelling from the West Bank into Jerusalem, and two lanes circumventing around the borders of Jerusalem for Palestinians with West Bank IDs.

According to Haaretz, the road was built over a decade ago.

About 600,000 Israelis live in over 230 settlements built illegally since the 1967 occupation of the Palestinian territories.

Israel began building the 712-kilometer barrier of towering concrete walls, barbed-wire fences, trenches and closed military roads inside the occupied West Bank back in 2002.

"Two roads were newly opened with a dividing eight-meter-high wall, where the right side of it is specialized for Palestinians and the left side is for settlers", Assaf said.
