Julia Goerges downs Bianca Andreescu to win the title in Auckland

Julia Goerges of Germany retained the WTA Auckland Classic title by beating Canada's teenager Bianca Andreescu on Sunday at Auckland, Australia.

Trailing 5-4 in the second set, she kept her cool while serving to stay in the match and the gritty performance typified her entire tournament. She played some terrific tennis, different tennis to a lot of players on the tour and I am pretty sure we are going to hear a lot in the future from her.

However, the 18-year-old Andreescu had a great start this season, reaching the Auckland singles final after fantastic victories against top seed Caroline Wozniacki and former World No.1 Venus Williams.

"I've had an awesome week, beaten a lot of top players and I'm really proud of myself".

Goerges is seeded No. 2 and was last year's champion.

Defending champion Goerges came through a stern test on Sunday as she had looked set to become the latest in a series of big names to fall to Andreescu in a remarkable week.

The 37-year-old Williams, who turned pro six years before Andreescu was born, is ranked 39th in the world.

Georges clinched the second set in 45 minutes with a pivotal break in the 11th game, then took the deciding third set in only 23 minutes as Andreescu exhausted in her eighth match at the tournament. "Bianca gave me a hard time today".

Andreescu broke every serve by Goerges in the first set, at one stage leading 4-0 before dropping her own serve twice.

She took the first set in only 30 minutes, unsettling second-seeded Goerges with the same aggressive return game and mixture of strokes which had flummoxed her earlier opponents.

But she found another level, breaking the German with some impetuous tennis.

But, having saved a match point at 5-4 down with a clutch second serve, it was Goerges who prevailed in the tiebreaker, eventually securing a semifinal berth on her third match point.

She continued her red-hot form in a 6-3 6-3 win over No.3 seed Hsieh Su-wei, becoming the first Canadian to advance to a WTA singles final since Eugenie Bouchard in 2016.
