Kim Jong-un gushes over Trump's latest 'personal letter'

Kim Jong-un gushes over Trump's latest 'personal letter'

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo welcomes North Korean Vice-Chairman Kim Yong Chol to a meeting in Washington, Jan. 18, 2019.

Kim Jong Un has received another letter from President Donald Trump, one that prompted the young leader to express "great satisfaction", according to North Korean state media and confirmed by a senior administration official.

US President Donald Trump and North Korea leader Kim Jong-un met for the first time in June. "Also, it encourages the whole nation to the reunification of the country".

'[Kim] spoke highly of President Trump for expressing his unusual determination and will for the settlement of the issue with a great interest in the second DPRK-US summit, ' the Korean Central News Agency said.

It comes just three days after Trump said he "looks forward" to another summit to discuss denuclearisation with Kim.

Pompeo said after the Singapore summit the USA hoped to achieve "major disarmament" by North Korea by the end of Trump's current term in office in January 2021.

Kim has indicated to South Korean President Moon Jae-in he would undertake a "groundbreaking" denuclearization measure, South Korean newspaper DongA Ilbo reported January 24.

Kim said North Korea would "believe in the positive way of thinking of President Trump" as the countries advance "step by step" towards their goals, the agency added.

The White House announced the second summit last week after a 90 minute sit-down meeting with Yong-Chol - who also brought a letter from Kim for Trump.

"We will wait with patience and in good faith and, together with the United States, advance step by step toward the goal to be reached by the two countries", Mr Kim was quoted as saying.

He also wants better relations with the U.S. to try to revive his country's moribund economy to pave the way for a prolonged rule by his family, experts say.

The US could say North Korea took a substantial step toward denuclearization if the ICBMs are withdrawn from the latter's territory.

Pyongyang is seeking sanctions relief and rejects demands for what it calls its "unilateral" disarmament, while Washington insists that the measures must stay in place until the North gives up its nuclear arsenal.

CSIS, which last reported on the 20 missile bases in November, said the Sino-ri base has never been declared by North Korea and as a result "does not appear to be the subject of denuclearisation negotiations".

Mr Kim has so far suspended nuclear and missile tests, dismantled North Korea's nuclear testing site and parts of its rocket engine test facility and taken conciliatory measures, like releasing American detainees.

The North has not provided a detailed account of its nuclear facilities and global sanctions remain in place. The North now says it's time for the United States to come up with reciprocal measures.
