Kyrie Irving led the Boston Celtics past the Toronto Raptors

Kyrie Irving led the Boston Celtics past the Toronto Raptors

"I felt like the best person to call was "Bron" because he's been in this situation".

"I had to call Bron, and tell him I apologize for being that young player that wanted everything at his fingertips", Irving said after the Celtics beat the Toronto Raptors 118-107 on Wednesday night.

"I wanted everything to be at my threshold and to be the guy to make the change and lead the team and have the responsibility of being the best player in the world and leading the team".

Coming off a three-game losing streak, and without guards Kyrie Irving and Marcus Smart making their marks in the backcourt Monday night against the Brooklyn Nets, the Celtics had to make a statement - and that would be to edge the conference-imposing Raptors in Boston's TD Garden, 117-108.

In the summer of 2017, Irving decided he was ready to branch out and lead his own team.

Now taking on the role as Celtics leader, Irving gained a new perspective on leadership and also noted he "should have kept it in house" when he criticized his younger teammates. Of course, Irving wanted to share duties with LeBron.

However, Irving admitted that he regretted what he said. The Raptors bench hasn't put up good numbers this season, but when used properly has been effective, and part of that is keeping guys who can get the bench offense rolling on the floor with the bench, and Nurse failed to do that tonight, and it ultimately cost them the game.

Kyrie said he called LeBron last weekend and apologized.

"He's been in that situation before, he's been in that situation with me where I've been the young guy, that 22-year-old kid who wanted everything now".

We'll be sure to hear more from LeBron once the media gets a hold of him. "And if I want to see them do well, I gotta empower them".

The Celtics made just one of their first 11 shots in the fourth, giving up nine straight points to trail 92-89 midway through the quarter. "So, I take it with a grain of salt and I just enjoy all of it".

"It's not one guy's fault". It took a lot to think that our road could have been easier. And I want this.

Have no fear, though, Celtics fans. Irving now realizes what LeBron was attempting to do.

"Obviously when he comes here", Irving said, "I'm going to try to kick his ass".
