Lion Air crash: 'Black box' voice recorder found

Lion Air crash: 'Black box' voice recorder found

A flight data recorder was recovered shortly after the crash, but listening to the last conversations between the pilots and ground control should help investigators finish piecing together what went wrong in the short flight.

According to Haryo Satmiko, the deputy chief of the Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT), which is leading the investigation into the crash, the second black box was found on the morning of January 14, 2019, "broken into two pieces " BBC News reports.

It was discovered under 26 feet of mud on the seabed using a high-tech "ping locator", Lt. Col. Agung Nugroho, spokesman for the Indonesian Navy's western fleet, told the Associated Press.

Time was of the essence in locating the voice recorder, as its acoustic beacon was created to ping its location for 90 days after a crash, Rear Adm. Harjo Susmoro told reporters - meaning that in about two weeks, it would have become much harder to find.

Lion Air initially claimed that problems with the aircraft were fixed before its final flight.

And in 2011, after 23 months submerged at a depth of 3,900m in the Atlantic Ocean, the intact black boxes of Air France flight AF447 were found, allowing investigators to determine what caused the 2009 crash.

"We're thankful and grateful that they have found the CVR, but it's not enough", said Evi Samsul Komar, whose son and nephew were on the fatal flight. They had been scouring the waters of the presumed crash site that are about 30 meters (98 feet) deep.

Divers have found the second black box from a doomed Lion Air jet that crashed past year killing all 189 people onboard, Indonesian authorities said Monday.

The cockpit data recorder showed the jet's airspeed indicator had malfunctioned on its last four flights.

Pilots flying the same plane a day earlier had experienced a similar problem en route from Denpasar, Bali, to Jakarta, the transportation safety committee said then.

The pilots appeared to struggle with an automated system created to keep the plane from stalling - a new feature of the Boeing 737 Max.

The family of one of the pilots has sued Boeing Co.in Chicago, alleging that aircraft sensors provided inaccurate information, causing the plane to nosedive, and accusing Boeing of failing to provide proper training to pilots about the 737 MAX 8's features.

The Lion Air 737's flight data recorder showed that pilots had repeatedly tried to correct its nose from pointing down, possibly after erroneous data from AoA sensors was fed into a system that automatically adjusts some of its movements.
