AG Healey's Office also secured debt relief for students that went to the American Career Institute, reached settlements worth more than $6 million with Kaplan Career Institute, Lincoln Tech, Sullivan & Cogliano, and Salter College, filed a lawsuit against ITT Tech, and reached a settlement with an unlicensed for-profit nursing school.

A total of 179,529 students across the nation who attended CEC schools will receive about $493.7 million in debt relief as part of the agreement between the for-profit college and Attorney General Dana Nessel, along with attorneys general from 47 other states. (CEC) has agreed to stop collecting more than $11 million in debt from almost 3,000 students in MA and will reform its practices following allegations of misleading prospective students and predatory enrollment tactics.

CEC was once among the biggest for-profit educational institutions in the country, with brands including International Academy of Design & Technology, Le Cordon Bleu, Missouri College, and Sanford-Brown under its umbrella.

Eligible students will receive a letter from CEC within 60 days advising them that CEC will no longer attempt to collect student debt forgiven under the terms of this settlement.

AG Healey's Office has been at the forefront of efforts to secure relief for defrauded students.

CEC misled students about the total costs of enrollment at its institutions.

Former students with debt relief eligibility questions can contact CEC at 847-781-3600 or visit the CEC website.

"CEC's practices were unfair to students as well as taxpayers who supported federal student loans that were destined to fail", says Miller.

As a result, some students could not obtain professional licenses and incurred debts that they could not repay nor discharge.

State attorneys general across the US began investigating the company in 2014 following allegations that it misled prospective students to get them to enroll.

Make no misrepresentations concerning accreditation, selectivity, graduation rates, placement rates, transferability of credit, financial aid, veterans' benefits, or licensure requirements.

Notify credit-reporting agencies of the debt relief to remove the debt from students' credit reports. State officials also alleged the company improperly counted job placement rates, such as by including graduates who continued working at internships after graduation or got a job outside of their degree field.

Almost 180,000 students who took classes offered at Career Education Corp.'s dozens of campuses over the past 30 years won't have to repay loans they took out with the company.

Provide a risk-free trial period of 21 days for online programs and 7 days for on-campus programs, if they have less than 24 college credit hours when starting the program.

Assistant Attorney General Joseph Chambers, head of the Finance Department, assisted the Attorney General with this matter.
