‘Mystery team’ involved in Manny Machado free agency sweepstakes

‘Mystery team’ involved in Manny Machado free agency sweepstakes

LeMahieu comes to NY after eight seasons with the Rockies.

The Bombers on Friday reached an agreement on a two-year contract with free agent second baseman DJ LeMahieu, WFAN baseball insider Jon Heyman confirmed.

While Manny Machado waits to make his move, the Yankees are continuing to stockpile infielders.

LeMahieu will reportedly make $24 million over the next two seasons in the Bronx. But the general consensus is that he will sign his deal first, with the Phillies and Chicago White Sox the main two players for his services.

Despite the seemingly obvious fit at second that would move star rookie Gleyber Torres to shortstop, Jack Curry of the YES Network reports that New York's plan is to have LeMahieu serve as a utility infielder.

Since the Yankees are not in on Bryce Harper (by all appearances, at least), Machado going elsewhere would probably slightly help a dark horse like the Cubs on Harper.

In other words, the Phillies either accidentally landed a potential Machado bargaining piece or are making a not-so-subtle push to get the All-Star's attention three weeks after hosting him at Citizens Bank Park.

Machado's market has yet to develop as he likely hoped it would, with teams becoming more and more cautious towards big-ticket free agents.

The Phillies also have avoided arbitration with relievers Hector Neris (one year, $1.8 million, per the Associated Press) and Jose Alvarez, starting pitchers Jerad Eickhoff (one year, $975,000, per AP), Vince Velasquez and Adam Morgan (one year, $1.1 million per Robert Murray of The Athletic); outfielder Aaron Altherr; third baseman Maikel Franco; and second baseman César Hernández.

Late last night we learned that the Phillies added Machado's former infield coach.
