President Trump makes unannounced visit to MLK memorial

"Beautiful day", Trump said to reporters.

After Mike Pence appeared on the CBS program Face the Nation and quoted Rev. Martin Luther King to urge Congress to fund President Trump's border wall, the late reverend's son has responded.

The Ebenezer Baptist Church is part of the Martin Luther King Jr.

This year, however, Trump has been grounded in Washington by the ongoing government shutdown. The annual service was in doubt until Delta Air Lines, which is headquartered in Atlanta, gave the National Park Service a grant to reopen the site.

"May the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the efforts we have made to fully effectuate his dream remind us that faith and love unite us together as one great American family", wrote Trump. In a tweet, he said it was "my great honor" to visit the monument.

Also Monday, several Democratic presidential hopefuls attended events to honor the civil rights leader. The president's schedule listed no public events to mark the federal holiday honoring King's life, which had drawn criticism from civil rights activists.

He called the lack of planned celebrations to honor the civil rights activist during the federal holiday "an insult to the American people", the newspaper reported.

On Monday, Martin Luther King III reportedly took exception to Pence's attempt to paint the two men as having a common goal, in remarks in D.C. from the National Action Network's annual MLK Day breakfast.

"The White House has not only shut down those workers, they shut down the King holiday", he said. In 2007, President George W. Bush visited the Cardozo High School in the capital to spend time with volunteers, highlighting the holiday as a day of service.
