Project Cars devs' next-gen console sounds like a bad idea

Called the Mad Box, the new console is said to be compatible with "most VR headsets and those upcoming", according to Slightly Mad Studios CEO Ian Bell.

In a slightly freaky move, the developer of racing sim Project CARS Slightly Mad has announced that it is making a new console called the Mad Box.

Racing game developer Slightly Mad Studios has chose to branch out into the console manufacturing industry with their upcoming Mad Box console. Next, he said on Variety that the new game console would roll out in up to three years, and would support 120 frames-per-second for virtual reality play.

The Mad Box will also aim to support major VR headsets, and the specs will be equivalent to a "very fast PC 2 years from now".

For many years, the PlayStation and Xbox have been the go-to consoles for serious gamers, but a newcomer wants to change that. "You have it", the founder wrote on Twitter, then clarifying the Mad Box hits 60FPS per eye.

Bell's Twitter account, which was created earlier this morning, initially tweeted "The Mad Box is coming".

After a surprise tweet from the CEO of Slightly Mad, Ian Bell, it seems that the racing sim developers are indeed looking to blow the entire console market wide open.

If the console really is as powerful as Bell states, one must ponder about the price of the console.

"You want 4k, you want VR at 60fps?". "As of now we have no plans to pay developers "incentives" to exclude other hardware vendors" explains Bell.

Bell says the company is still in early talks with components manufacturers, so more details about the Mad Box's final specs haven't been confirmed yet.

Based on the success enjoyed by the developer so far, it isn't surprising that Bell said they have "multiple investors already offering the required funding" to bring the Mad Box to the market.

Slightly Mad are also working on a Project Cars game for pocket telephones, as well as still updating Project Cars 2.

Could the Mad Box happen?

Do you think Slightly Mad has what it takes to compete with the likes of PlayStation 5 and "Xbox Two"?
