Radio Signals Detected From Outer Space

The project wasn't yet living up to its full potential, suggesting that there are plenty more bursts to be discovered. "The fact that one out of the 13 initial CHIME FRBs is a repeater suggests that these repeaters are not as rare as we thought previously", she said. We have never seen anything like this before. Though researchers have been able to track down the area of origin for at least one FRB, it's usually hard to study one.

Indeed, it's still early days in our understanding of FRBs, but a pair of papers published today in Nature are offering tantalising new clues about this enigmatic feature of the cosmos. With more data on fast radio bursts, including their sources and behavior, it's only a matter of time before astronomers and astrophysicists unravel their mystery. And when there are increased sources and more repeaters for the objective of conducting a study, the cosmic puzzles would become easier for them to have better understanding and it would then be clear that what the actual source of those blasts was.

The results from the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME), a interferometric radio telescope located in British Colombia, were unveiled at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Seattle, Washington on Monday.

After the Chime telescope is now fully operational, could be measured until the end of the year perhaps thousands of such Radio bursts, said Deborah Good, PhD candidate at the University of British Columbia.

The unexplained radio bursts were recorded over the course of just three weeks in July 2018, during the telescope's warmup phase.

A number of speculations have been made about what could be causing the radio bursts - with theories ranging from stars exploding to alien life, however, currently, there is little evidence to prove either. Before they were spotted over the summer, astronomers reportedly found between 50 and 60 examples of the radio bursts. Previous studies have suggested that FRBs may be the remnants of distant supernovas, or radiation spewed out by supermassive black holes.

The first rapid burst that repeated was named FRB 121102 and was detected by Arecibo radio telescope in 2015.

Known by its acronym CHIME, the world's most powerful radio telescope, spread across an area as big as a football pitch, is poised to detect many more of the enigmatic pulses now that it is fully operational.

The new repeating FRB has another unusual characteristic as well.

He added: "That tells us something about the environments and the sources". It came six times from the same location, 1.5 billion light-years away. But where can they come from?

One of the studies reports on the discovery of 13 FRBs, including seven that were recorded at the lowest frequency thus far - 400 megahertz.
