Raptors sign former Golden State Warriors guard Patrick McCaw

According to a report from Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the Toronto Raptors plan to sign McCaw for the remainder of the season after the third-year swingman cleared waivers on Wednesday afternoon and became an unrestricted free agent.

On Sunday, the Cavs waived McCaw after three games in Cleveland ahead of a deadline that would have guaranteed his contract. The NBA had examined the two-year, $6 million offer sheet closely prior to approving it, league sources said, but found no reason to disallow it. The Warriors had the opportunity to match, but they declined to do so. While the Cavaliers followed all the rules, and can argue McCaw played poorly in what they viewed as an audition before his contract became guaranteed, it wasn't hard to find the circumstances a bit fishy. "I don't know that there's been a totally nonguaranteed offer sheet before". Investigators likely feel that the team tried to circumvent his restricted free agency. McCaw, 23, was an early-season holdout following two years with the Golden State Warriors.

The NBA is investigating the Cavs for possibility circumventing the salary cap after waiving McCaw. The Warriors would not receive anything in return, per terms of the NBA's labor deal. Fines could range anywhere between $3 to $6 million as well as the loss of future first-round draft picks. On top of this, if there is any instance of collusion between both the Cavaliers organization and McCaw's group, then Cleveland will lose their 2019 first-round draft pick along with future draft selections. Most league executives are skeptical that the Cavs would be punished.

Golden State felt uneasy with the situation, asking the National Basketball Association to take a closer look at what happened. It was a crafty bit of maneuvering by the Cavs, and it's easy to see how the Warriors would be annoyed by their tactics.
