Ride over for 200 employees of Apple’s autonomous vehicle program

A spokesperson for the tech company confirmed the layoffs to the business news channel.

However, under the direction of Mansfield, Apple began shifted away from building a complete auto to focus instead on the underlying self-driving technology that can be added to an existing vehicle platform.

Apple is well known for "siloing" employees and/or restricting their access to projects in order to keep secrets, so that engineers and designers working on, say, iPhones don't mix with staffers working on MacBooks, and none of those people mix with staffers working on autonomous-car technology, for instance.

Apple has restructured the project in the past also.

Apple's secretive self-driving vehicle division, codenamed Project Titan, has undergone a major restructuring under new leadership. The move is said to be tied to a reorganization under engineering vice president Doug Field, who joined fellow Apple veteran Bob Mansfield late past year to help lead the division.

An Apple spokesperson stated the company still sees "a huge opportunity with autonomous systems" but wants to turn their attention to other more pressing initiatives.

Apple has trimmed the size of its autonomous vehicles team, laying off 200 people, CNBC reports.

Chief executive Tim Cook later said he saw autonomous driving systems as a "core technology" for the future, and that Apple wants to move into the automotive sector because "there is a major disruption looming" from new technologies.

Apple will cut back on hiring for some divisions after lower-than-expected iPhone sales and missing its revenue forecast for the holiday quarter, Bloomberg reported, citing sources familiar with the matter. When CEO Tim Cook first spoke of it in June 2017, it was thought that Apple was developing its own vehicle.
