Sen. Kamala Harris: I'm Running For President

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) formally jumped into the 2020 presidential campaign. "And I'm very excited about it".

Harris' campaign will be headquartered in Baltimore - giving aides an East Coast hub in a racially diverse city that has struggled with wide income disparities - and Oakland, where Harris was born to immigrant parents who came to the United States to advance their academic careers.

The California senator made the announcement on the morning of Martin Luther King Jr.

"I love my country".

During her interview with ABC, Harris said that "the American people deserve to have someone who is going to fight for them... who will be concerned about them and put them in front of self-interest".

Harris recently published a memoir, The Truths We Hold: An American Journey, that dove into numerous messages she is expected to focus on during her campaign.

Harris addressed her law enforcement background in her book. "I'm running to lift those voices, to bring our voices together".

Harris' campaign will be based in Baltimore, with a second office in Oakland, California. Harris has won three statewide elections in California, giving her a potential leg up over opponents planning to compete in the vast and expensive state.

Elected to the U.S. Senate in 2016, Harris has quickly made a name for herself in the upper chamber, seizing her perch on the Judiciary Committee as a national platform for issues related to the Supreme Court, criminal justice reform, and immigration. Elizabeth Warren, Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard and former San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro have moved forward with plans to seek the party's nomination.

Waleed Shahid, a spokesman for the left-wing activist group Justice Democrats and a Sanders delegate in 2016, said Harris is "a blank slate" to many voters. She is slated to speak at the Pink Ice Gala, a major event held by the local chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.

She joins what is expected to be a wide open race for the Democratic presidential nomination. Harris's prosecutorial record has recently come under new scrutiny after a blistering opinion piece in The New York Times criticized her repeated claim that she was a "progressive prosecutor", focused on changing a broken criminal justice system from within.

Harris is a first-term senator and former California attorney general known for her rigorous questioning of President Donald Trump's nominees. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) listens during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on homeland security on January 16, 2018. On Friday, she will travel to SC, where black voters make up a large share of the Democratic electorate. When Stephanopoulos asked what qualifies her to be commander in chief, Harris alluded to a higher calling.

The challenging task for Harris after those early state hurdles would be to try to fend off her challengers and consolidate the African-American vote. Several former top Hillary Clinton campaign advisers will be among her staff.

Harris also identifies as the first South Asian-American senator in history, according to her Senate website.
