With discovery of sixth terror tunnel, Israel declares Operation Northern Shield complete

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has admitted that its military was behind a missile attack near Damascus late on Friday.

Israel is believed to have carried out hundreds of airstrikes against Iranian and Hezbollah targets throughout the Syrian civil war, but generally avoids commenting about them.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) rarely acknowledge striking specific targets in Syria but its outgoing chief of staff just openly confessed to running a large-scale bombing campaign in its neighbor's territory.

He praised the IDF chief's work against the manufacture of precision weapons in Lebanon, dismantling Hezbollah's attack tunnels during Operation Northern Shield, action against Hamas on the Gaza border and in thwarting hundreds of terrorist attacks in the West Bank. "Just in the past 36 hours, the air force attacked Iranian depots full of Iranian weapons in the Damascus International Airport", Netanyahu said, speaking at the weekly cabinet meeting in his Jerusalem office, as cited by The Times of Israel.

On Saturday, Syria said it filed complaints with the U.N. Security Council and with U.N. Secretary-General Antonia Guterres over Israel's alleged airstrikes.

With sixth Hezbollah tunnel discovered Saturday afternoon, Israel declared victory and announced the completion of Operation Northern Shield on Sunday.

Eisenkot, who will step down on Tuesday, will be replaced by Maj.

After previously reporting the discovery of five tunnels, the Israeli military said another had been found yesterday, 55 metres deep and reaching "a few tens of metres" into Israel from a point 800 metres within Lebanon.

"According to our intelligence and our assessment of the situation there are no longer any cross-border attack tunnels from Lebanon into Israel".

"We'll continue our engineering actions along the border and tracking Hezbollah's underground activities".

In the past days, Eisenkot gave a series of interviews with both Israeli and foreign media, warning Iran against entrenching itself militarily in Syria.

Eisenkot told the New York Times on Friday that "we struck thousands of targets without claiming responsibility or asking for credit".

Israel has long called for a crackdown on the Iran-backed Hezbollah, a heavily armed mini-army that is believed to possess an arsenal of some 150,000 rockets that can reach almost all of Israel.

"We have achieved the goal that we set out to achieve a month and a half ago", he said.
