2 killed after building collapses in Turkey's Istanbul

A seven-story building collapsed in Istanbul on Wednesday, killing at least one person and trapping several others inside the rubble, Turkish media reports said.

Yerlikaya also said there was a textile workshop on the ground floor that was operating without a licence.

"Three people were killed and 12 others were wounded", the governor's office said in a brief statement, noting that three of the injured were in "critical condition".

Emergency teams pulled at least three people out alive as crowds surrounded the site.

The tragedy also raised alarms over the possibility of major destruction if a large natural disaster hit the city.

Dozens of people are feared trapped under the rubble of an apartment block in Istanbul, Turkey.

"We will work without interruption until the search and rescue operation is complete", Yerlikaya told reporters.

Neighbor Cemile Dag said the collapse brought to mind haunting images from a deadly natural disaster that hit northwestern Turkey in 1999, destroying thousands of homes.

She said: "At first I thought a gas tank had exploded in our building". It only took a few seconds for the entire building to fall to the ground. "There were wails, screaming", she said.

He said: "Istanbul is situated on a seismic belt". As the media look into the incident, it was discovered that the building's top three floors were built without proper documents and permit.

Zeki Dag, the local district administrator, told CNN-Turk television that more than a dozen families were living in the building.

Rescuers carry an injured woman on a stretcher from the site of a collapsed building in Kartal district of Istanbul, Turkey.

"In the event of an quake in Istanbul, we could be faced with a dire picture".
