After Trump call, Foxconn recommits to Wisconsin factory

After Trump call, Foxconn recommits to Wisconsin factory

In a statement, the company said the site will serve as "an advanced manufacturing facility" and "a hub of high technology innovation".

Foxconn's plans have changed so often since it secured the largest tax break in state history for a $10 billion plant, critics and Wisconsin officials are left to wonder whether Foxconn will back out all together.

Louis Woo, special assistant to Gou, said on Wednesday that Foxconn wanted to create a "technology hub" in Wisconsin that would largely consist of research facilities.

Trump responded to the news on February 1, confirming that he'd spoken with Terry Gou, the company's founder and chairman.

"We look forward to continuing to expand our investment in American talent in Wisconsin and the United States".

Hogan, chief executive of the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation, also disputed the Nikkei's claim that Evers was attempting to renegotiate side deals with the company.

Trump tweeted that it was "great news" for Wisconsin.

Wisconsin promised almost $4 billion in state and local tax incentives to Foxconn if it invested $10 billion and created 13,000 jobs for the project, which Trump heralded a year ago as the "eighth wonder of the world".

The decision followed "productive discussions with the White House and the company" and a "personal conversation" between the president and Foxconn chairman Terry Gou, it said. That same day Foxconn announces it now plans to build much smaller Generation 6 screens and phase in production of Generation 10.5 screens later.

Some in the state have blamed Evers for the alleged shifting of Foxconn's plan.

Heavy machinery is seen before the arrival of U.S. President Donald Trump as he participates in the Foxconn Technology Group groundbreaking ceremony for its LCD manufacturing campus, in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, U.S., June 28, 2018.

The latest Foxconn statement did not say whether the commitment to this size factory would affect the type of workers who would be employed in Wisconsin.

Foxconn doubled down on its commitment to southeastern Wisconsin after reports surfaced that it was reconsidering manufacturing at its Mount Pleasant facility.

On Wednesday, however, Foxconn said that it would no longer be building that factory after all.

Foxconn, officially known as Hon Hai Precision Industry, is the world's largest contract-electronics manufacturer and assembles most of its products in China, leaving it acutely vulnerable to Trump's tariffs.

Tony Evers told reporters in the state Capitol: "I'm comfortable that they're still committed to the state, they're still committed to this Generation 6 technology, but that doesn't mean we won't continue to encourage them to be more transparent and more consistent".

In a speech at a charity event, Gou said Trump phoned him Friday and promised to do his best to resolve the problem of high-tech labor shortage in Wisconsin.
