Amazon May Be Reconsidering Long Island City Headquarters

Amazon May Be Reconsidering Long Island City Headquarters

The person briefed on the matter said that Amazon was still working toward winning approval from NY officials and had not given up on the proposal, but was considering potential alternatives to NY.

The shares initially dipped when the Washington Post report was posted Friday but then quickly gained back some of the loss.

It is unclear if Amazon truly is considering pulling its HQ2 project out of New York City - as was reported Friday morning by the Washington Post - but this much is clear: Officials from New Jersey have been courting the company for some time, selling Newark as a viable and cost-effective alternative.

A recent Amazon-commissioned poll shows that about 69% of registered voters in NY approve of the deal, but The Washington Post's report reveals that the vocal opposition may be enough to convince Amazon that it makes more sense to put its headquarters in a city that wants it.

Friday afternoon, Boca Raton Mayor Scott Singer tweeted, "Hey @amazon, heard many NYS leaders oppose deal for your 2nd headquarters".

He told the Guardian: "Amazon has extorted ny from the first day of this process, and this seems to be their latest effort to do that".

In the face of heated local opposition, Amazon is reportedly reconsidering building a new headquarters in New York City.

"Whether it's building a pipeline of local jobs through workforce training or funding computer science classes for thousands of New York City students, we are working hard to demonstrate what kind of neighbor we will be", an Amazon spokesperson said in an email.

But if it were to back out of the NY project, Amazon has plenty of options: More than a dozen other cities were in the running for HQ2.

The two have been at the forefront of the Amazon opposition, and most recently, Sen.

Cuomo has promoted the 25,000 jobs Amazon is expected to bring to New York City. But the mayor said he was "not sorry at all" that the city and state didn't go higher than $2.25 billion. Council Speaker Corey Johnson criticized Amazon last week for pitting workers against one another.

"I don't think, in the end, there's a lot of public servants want to be responsible for losing 25,000 to 40,000 jobs", de Blasio said.

Detractors-including including US Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who represents a nearby district in Queens and the Bronx-have pointed to the potential neighborhood disruption, strains on an already congested public transit system, and rising rent and property prices that could push out existing residents from nearby neighborhoods.

Andrew Cuomo and NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio, both Democrats, are pushing for the Amazon deal after being instrumental in securing it.

Cuomo said NY would be able to "count on one hand the number of millionaires left in New York" if taxes go up. Each project in NY and Virginia is expected to create 25,000 jobs.
