Amazon to buy wi-fi startup eero

Amazon has agreed to buy eero, a specialist in home mesh Wi-Fi systems, for an undisclosed price.

As per a statement, Dave Limp, Senior VP, Device and Services, Amazon, said that the company has shared a vision of making the smart home experience even easier.

Mesh Wi-Fi networks are essential if you want good wireless coverage in a larger home/apartment, and while the market for these routers is huge, Eero has managed to stick out as one of the best options out there. Customers can customize an eero system to meet the needs of their home-regardless of shape or size-eliminating dead zones, ensuring flawless streaming video in every room, and delivering the bandwidth all connected devices need.

"Every customer deserves reliable and secure WiFi in every room", added Eero Co-Founder and CEO Nick Weaver. Eero can also communicate with the cloud to receive instructions and updates.

The deal offers another clear indication of Amazon's ambitions to control as many aspects of the connected home as it can. According to PitchBook, the San Francisco-based startup has raised $148 million in equity and debt. Eero collect no data on the behavior of users on the Internet and that will not change, said the company on Twitter. Often, doing so can be a bit of a pain, since most new devices involve a lengthy setup that involves pairing them with a voice assistant such as Alexa. He said that the company is committed to continuing innovation in the segment on behalf of its customers. "Amazon's Echo family depended on a third-party Wi-Fi system until this acquisition, because it was unable to engineer Wi-Fi and devices in a smart way together".

It's unclear if Amazon plans to continue using the Eero brand, or if it will integrate the company's tech into its own solutions. In January 2018, TechCrunch reported that Eero laid off 30 employees, representing about 20% of its workforce at the time.
