Apple gives education grant to U.S. teen for FaceTime bug find

It's a patch that fixes a bug that allowed users to spy on others by activating a group FaceTime call without the user's consent.

The update also had a handful of fixes for unrelated bugs in Foundation, IOKit and Live Photos in FaceTime, per Apple's security notes for iOS 12.1.4.

The bug allowed eavesdropping by someone calling their FaceTime contacts, receiving audio from them without their knowledge before they answered the call. Apple quickly disabled the Group FaceTime capability last Monday as it prepped a fix, then said a software update correcting the problem would come by the end of last week before acknowledging a slight delay. Apple was quick to disable the Group FaceTime issue within hours after it was widely publicised.

Apple told outlets that a fix would come later that week, but it instead arrived this week, delivering to the iPhone 5s and later, iPad Air and later and the 6th generation iPod touch. You can read the full security update details here. Here's what's fixed and how to apply the updates.

In a statement to The Verge, an Apple spokesperson said: "In addition to addressing the bug that was reported, our team conducted a thorough security audit of the FaceTime service and made additional updates to both the FaceTime app and server to improve security". Apple turned off the group chat feature last week, several days after a 14-year-old boy in Tucson, Arizona, discovered the flaw.
