Change will take 5 years, says Huawei

"Cyber security remains [a] top priority" for Huawei, the world's biggest manufacturer of telecom equipment, he said, while cautioning that the improvements would take time.

'Enhancing our software engineering capabilities is like replacing components on a high-speed train in motion.

Pressure has been growing on Huawei in Britain, one of its most important markets in Europe, since a government report in July past year found that technical and supply-chain issues with the company's equipment had exposed national telecom networks to new security risks.

Huawei has been having it tough in the last few weeks.

'It is a complicated and involved process and will take at least three to five years to see tangible results.

The government now has no own information on whether the Chinese company could be a security threat, Altmaier was quoted as saying, adding that the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) had been activated.

A spokesman for the parliament science and technology committee did not immediately respond to a request for comment. However, the bottom line is Huawei also makes great products.

Western security concerns surrounding Huawei, and fellow Chinese telecoms equipment firm ZTE Corp (0763.HK) (000063.SZ), centre around China's National Intelligence Law.

Depending on the Chinese equipment used by Western countries, the USA may have to be "more careful in sharing information, in transacting business", and a "host of things", Sondland said.

Liu said Huawei hired 12,000 people in Europe and in 2018 procured $6.3 billion worth of goods in Europe.

Huawei is under increasing pressure from the States, whose government is accusing it of helping the Chinese with spying.

A spokesman from the National Security Council advised that the U.S.is "working across government and with our allies and like-minded partners to mitigate risk in the deployment of 5G and other communications infrastructure".

Germany's federal cybersecurity agency is investigating whether China's Huawei Technologies could be a security threat after warnings from other countries, the Funke group of newspapers reported on Friday, citing Economy Minister Peter Altmaier.
