Facebook's Constant Tracking on Android Can Now Be Limited

Facebook's Constant Tracking on Android Can Now Be Limited

Prior to today's update, Android users didn't have much say over when Facebook had access to their location.

Facebook is adding a new background location control which will let you choose whether or not you want to share the location when the app is not in use. If you have location settings turned on in Instagram, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, or any of Facebook's other apps, it is still an all-or-nothing decision on Android whether or not to share your location or not.

It's noted that none of your previous choices in this regard will change, and Background Location will remain disabled if you never opted into Location Services.

Facebook will be showing a notification on the timeline that will alert users of this new feature. For people who had turned Location History "off" - or never turned it on in the first place - the new background location setting is "off". This move is at least in part supportive of that initiative. The company actively collects a lot of location data on your phone, and it's now notifying users about the data collection as a good measure.

Notably, Facebook said it wouldn't be "collecting any new information as a result of this update". The company has found itself in many privacy controversies in recent times, so this is a nice change of pace for once.

Is the new feature useful for you? This powerfully argues that embracing privacy will not kill or cripple marketers' use of consumer data. He is also VP of Strategy and Insights for the Local Search Association.
