Google Maps Augmented Reality Feature Testing Commences For Selected Users

Author David Pierce states that Google has only made the feature available to some users for testing at the moment and expects a wider release "later", as some aspects of the user interface still need refinement. It's like Street View for navigation. With AR Mode in Google Maps, you simply hold your phone up as the camera gets to work recognizing your surroundings. It provides navigation via a layer of augmented reality, plastered over actual reality as seen through your phone's camera.

Ms. Inman [Google's lead for user experience on the project] said Google is still tweaking even basic things like the look of the arrows.

To solve this, at Google's 2018 IO developer conference, the tech giant announced a new feature it is planning to introduce to address this glitch.

No dates have been set for making it widely available to Map users.

Google Maps' AR navigation feature could come in handy for challenging directions, Engadget reported. Go to 9:41 in the video below to see the feature in action. The company has not officially announced when the AR feature will out to all Google Maps users, with WSJ saying this will only happen when the company is sure that the feature is "ready". It is important to note that these AR features conserve significant amount of battery and mobile data.

If you move the camera, information about new landmarks such as cafes and supermarkets can pop up, with the ratings that Map users are familiar with. Although the version the WSJ tested isn't final, it helps us get a better idea of what's coming up.

From there, users can create a shortlist of their favorite destinations that they can share with their friends. A traditional map will still be shown at the bottom of your screen so you can have a bird's eye view of where you're headed.

And Google could soon roll out a new version of maps that addresses an age-old issue where you're unable to figure out which way is North or South.
