Google’s Pixel 4 could come with dual-SIM functionality enabled

To that end, a new piece of information suggests that the Google's next Pixel smartphone will feature better dual SIM functionality, among other features. Never mind the fact that eSIM support is very limited in the U.S. and the rest of the world, the Pixel's Dual SIM mode is one that goes back to the early 2000s. According to a report by XDA Developers, recent commits to Android Open Source Project's (AOSP) Gerrit, Google "will be adding property values in the framework and Telephony service to tell if a device has hardware support for multiSIM functionality". Just as you would on a phone with Dual SIM card support.

There are actually several different versions of dual-SIM: Dual SIM, Single Standby (DSSS); Dual SIM, Dual Standby (DSDS); and Dual SIM, Dual Active (DSDA). The most common is Dual SIM Dual Standby, wherein both SIMs are registered on the network at once, and both can receive calls / SMS, but generally only if the other SIM isn't already being used for that objective.

This is news and it's not; the Pixel 3 line is technically dual-SIM, but the functionality is disabled in most markets. Most Android smartphones come with Dual-SIM, Dual Active (DSDA) support, meaning users would be manually able to choose which SIM to be used for calls and data. You aren't required to purchase two identical phones to take advantage of the promotion, any combination of Pixel 3 or Pixel 3 XL phones will work regardless of their storage capacity. It's possible that the Pixel 2 and 3 will be updated with this improved capability, though we wouldn't hedge any bets on that. XDA is guessing that the Pixel 4 will support Dual SIM, Dual Standby (DSDS), which is certainly a logical conclusion. Specifically, the comment cites the implementation as necessary to differentiate the 2018 and 2019 Pixel - in other words, the Pixel 3 and Pixel 4. The same commit mentions that the Pixel 3 also supports dual-SIM use, but it's restricted to dogfooding.
