ICC charges Windies' Gabriel for Root slur

ICC charges Windies' Gabriel for Root slur

England captain Joe Root has suggested West Indies bowler Shannon Gabriel said something he "might regret" during an on-field exchange in the third Test.

"As a player you feel you have responsibilities to uphold on the field and I stand by what I did".

The Sky Sports cricket expert and columnist insisted that while there was now no evidence of any wrong-doing by Gabriel, Root's reaction sent an important message.

Asked to elaborate, Root added: "I think it should stay on the field".

West Indies assistant coach Vasbert Drakes said Friday that "the sky's the limit" for his young team as they look to complete a 3-0 sweep of the Test series against England.

Stump microphones did not pick up Gabriel's initial remarks, but he was spoken to about his language by the umpires at the time.

He added: "I wouldn't use the words so strong to say intimidate with pace but when you have pace, as someone who played the game as a fast bowler, it gives you more options of being able outfox the batters".

"I don't know who said what to whom. but boy do I applaud Joe Root's reaction here", Hussain wrote.

Root surprised when he made a decision to keep batting in the morning, moving from 111 to 122 in six overs when he hit a full toss from Shannon Gabriel to midwicket.

Root enjoyed a fine day at the crease, scoring a 16th Test century and finishing 111 not out as England built a lead of 448 runs.

An altercation between the pair took place on the third day of the third Test in St Lucia on Monday.

Stokes went eight overs later for 79, caught when he mistimed a pull shot, and after Ali (13) and Jonny Bairstow (two) went cheaply, West Indies quickly mopped up the tail, picking up the final four wickets for seven runs.

"The charge, which was laid by match umpires, will now be dealt with by Match Referee Jeff Crowe", the governing body said in a statement on Tuesday.

It is understood that no further disciplinary measures will be taken surrounding the incident.

The ECB made no comment.
