'It's like Indira has come back': Priyanka Gandhi Vadra makes political debut

Reacting to a remark by BJP leader, Harish Dwivedi about the Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's choice of clothes in a demeaning manner, former chief minister and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti slammed the BJP leader and said "what a woman chooses to wear is none of anybody's business".

Priyanka and elder brother Rahul Gandhi, the Congress president, waved at cheering supporters who chanted their names while dancing to drums.

She has been put in charge of the party in Uttar Pradesh state, which sends a large number of lawmakers to parliament and often plays a crucial role in deciding who forms the government.

The ruling BJP has often criticized the Congress party for what they term "dynastic politics".

Congress workers are planning a roadshow when the three leaders travel from the airport to the party's state headquarters.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Monday underlined his party's ambitions in Uttar Pradesh saying the party can not afford to be weak in the state. "Come align with us and bring change to Uttar Pradesh". "I have hope in my heart that together we will start a new kind of politics, a politics in which all of you will be stakeholders - my young friends, my sisters and even the weakest person, all their voices will be heard", Priyanka Gandhi is heard saying in the audio message shared through the Congress's Shakti App and phone calls to voters.

Priyanka's appointment as the general secretary assumes significance as the Congress is desperately trying to revive itself in the Hindi-speaking state, which used to be its bastion till the mid-1980s.

Her entry in politics came just weeks before the Lok Sabha polls are scheduled in the country.

From 21 seats in the 2009 general election in Uttar Pradesh, Congress' tally fell to just two in 2014.
