Last 4 years hottest on record, United Nations confirms

It was also nominally the warmest year for Europe (and particularly the hottest in France, Germany and Switzerland) since continental records began in 1910. The top three costliest natural disasters globally were all in the U.S., making it their fourth-costliest year ever, at $160 billion.

If it seems like you've heard this before, you have: Eighteen of the hottest 19 years have occurred since 2001.

Weather extremes last year included wildfires in California and Greece, drought in South Africa, floods in India, while the new year saw Queensland and Tasmania threatened by record-breaking floods and bushfires.

Specifically, NASA said global temperatures in 2018 were 1.5 degrees Fahrenheit above the average from 1951 to 1980.

Global temperatures in 2018 were the fourth warmest since records began in 1880, USA government scientists have confirmed.

Earth's higher-than-average global surface temperatures in 2018 resulted in the year being named the fourth warmest on record, according to independent analyses released by two United States agencies Wednesday.

"The long-term temperature trend is far more important than the ranking of individual years, and that trend is an upward one", the UN's World Mereological Organisation (WMO) secretary-general Petteri Taalas said in a statement. Scientists warn that if we're to avoid the worst affects of climate change, we cannot allow the temperature to rise more than 2 degrees compared to pre-industrial levels.

Last December was the second-warmest December in the 139 years that records have been kept.

Weather dynamics mean warming affects regions in different ways.

Scientists found that the Arctic has experienced the most warming, contributing to global sea level rise. NASA adds that the melting of Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets contributed to a rise in sea level. This is in part due, according to NASA, from increased emissions in the atmosphere of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases created by human activity.

NASA clarified that it gathers its measurements from "6,300 weather stations, ship- and buoy-based observations of sea surface temperatures, and temperature measurements from Antarctic research stations".
