The Palace official said the government should instead "step up" its immunization drive, with the help of local government units (LGUs). "I think the LGUs play a very critical and an important part in this immunization program and other programs of the government", he said.

"With regard to the government's immunization program under the DoH, the DoH has been directed to boost communication efforts on the importance of vaccination, with the active involvement of government media entities like the PCOO", he said.

READ: DOH looks into suspected Sarangani measles outbreak On Wednesday, the DOH declared a measles outbreak in Metro Manila following a 550-percent increase in patients contracting the virus from January 1 to February 6 this year, compared with the same period last year.

An outbreak of measles has been declared in Metro Manila, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Western Visayas, and Central Visayas, which came following a dip in immunization coverage a year ago following the controversy on anti-dengue vaccine Dengvaxia. In addition, 861 suspected cases have been reported in the Metro Manila area during the first month of the year.

The number of measles cases rose from 791 in 2017 to 5,120 in 2018.

"The measles vaccine is safe and effective and had been successfully used in the Philippines for more than 40 years now", UNICEF Philippines Deputy Representative Julia Rees said.

No deaths were reported in the 155 reported cases reported among adults between the ages of 19 and 41.

The Bicol regional office on Friday said Masbate and Sorsogon provinces each recorded one death due to measles out of 55 cases so far this year.

"Our children are protected so there is no cause for concern", said a statement by the Federal Health Ministry.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said the government should seriously consider mandatory vaccination of children following the outbreak of measles in the National Capital Region (NCR), Central Luzon, Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon), and Central and Western Visayas. Measles is an airborne disease that infects the respiratory tract, and its complications include severe diarrhea, pneumonia, blindness, and even death.

Its signs and symptoms include cough, runny nose, red eyes or conjunctivitis, fever, and skin rashes lasting for more than three days.

A day after declaring a measles outbreak in Metro Manila, the Health department on Thursday expanded the scope of its alert to other regions of Luzon and Central and Eastern Visayas, as the disease claimed at least 24 lives last month.

"To the parents, let's not take the health of our children for granted".
