New York Detective Killed By

"It's a very hard, painful night for our city".

De Blasio said Wednesday all flags in the city would be lowered to half-staff to honor the slain officer.

Police say Det. Brian Simonsen was shot at a T-Mobile store in the Richmond Hill section of Queens at about 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Both detectives were taken to Jamaica Hospital by patrol auto, the officials said.

"They did not hesitate". As the two officers went into the store, a suspect came out of a back room with a replica handgun.

O'Neil described him as a "career criminal".

The officers opened fire, shooting 42 times, officials said.

"That was when Detective Simonsen was shot", the commissioner said.

The Associated Press said the doors of the store were blown out by the gunfire and glass fragments littered the sidewalk. Bullet holes pocked frosted windows decorated with the T-Mobile logo. Simonsen and his partner, who were in the area working another case, responded. Another NYPD officer was wounded during the incident and was rushed to the hospital along with Simonsen where he was pronounced dead. He was shot multiple times and taken to hospital.

At the hospital, officers guarded the emergency room entrance as O'Neill and de Blasio met with Gorman and offered their condolences to Simonsen's wife and mother.

"Every day our men and women in uniform risk their lives to protect us, and tonight we are truly heartbroken to lose one of our own", James, a Democrat, said in a tweet. "His mom, who has suffered so much". "The shock that they are feeling was so painful to see".

A passerby stopped and drove him to the hospital in his auto. He was a 19-year veteran of the police department. Multiple reports identify him as Christopher Ransom of Brooklyn. Investigators are looking into whether Ransom is the same suspect seen on surveillance video robbing a cell phone store on Rockaway Boulevard in January.

"With the suspect advancing toward them, the officers discharged their weapons and retreated out of the store", O'Neill said. Despite reports that there may be another suspect, O'Neill said he worked alone.

"Brian was a good man, he was a good detective", he added. "This tragedy is a heartbreaking reminder of the risks the fearless men and women in law enforcement face every day to keep us safe".
