Pot smokers find caged tiger in abandoned house

An overweight tiger was found abandoned in a Houston home on Monday.

Houston Police Department's Major Offenders, Livestock Animal Cruelty Unit responded to the scene, the report said.

Sergeant Jason Alderete told KTRK-TV the tipsters went to the house to smoke marijuana when they found the animal.

The wild animal was first discovered by two people who entered the almost vacant house looking for a place to smoke marijuana, KHOU-TV reported officials as saying.

Agency spokeswoman Lara Cottingham told the Houston Chronicle that a wildlife refuge would take the tiger on Tuesday.

Although the tiger, which appeared to be well fed, was cooperative, it was tranquilized for the trip across town to the BARC campus, which is mostly used for dogs, cats and occasional farm animals, Cottingham said.

She was friendly, police said, but she was tranquilised for safety reasons as they moved her from the home over to BARC's headquarters.

Houston Zoo said in a statement that it would not be able to take the tiger.

Police say the animal was being kept in a cage that was not large or sturdy enough for its size with several packages of meat nearby, according to KTRK-TV.

The tiger was taken to an animal shelter and will be transferred to an undisclosed animal sanctuary in Texas. "More often than not it gets big, it gets expensive, it gets unsafe, and they end up turning the animal in or abandoning it".

It is unclear what charges the owner of the house may face now. They are endangered - the WWF estimates there are fewer than 4,000 left in the wild.
