'Powerhouse' Actor Albert Finney Dead at 82

'Powerhouse' Actor Albert Finney Dead at 82

A statement from a family spokesman said: "Albert Finney, aged 82, passed away peacefully after a short illness with those closest to him by his side".

It is unknown as yet what led to Finney's death; however, in 2011, he revealed he was receiving treatment for kidney cancer. His breakthrough came in 1960 with Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, which led directly to Finney's Oscar-nominated lead role in the 1963 film Tom Jones.

Veteran British actor and five-time Academy Award nominee Albert Finney-best known for his roles in Annie, Erin Brockovich, Tom Jones and Murder on the Orient Express-has passed away. He is survived by Delmage and his son, Simon, from his marriage to Wenham. After that he starred opposite Audrey Hepburn in Two for the Road, then stepped behind the camera as director for 1968's Charlie Bubbles.

He was also nominated for best supporting actor for his performance in Erin Brockovich (2000).

To millions of people, however, Finney will always be Daddy Warbucks - having played the beloved bald billionaire in the 1982 film adaptation of the hit musical Annie.

Although he never won, Julia Roberts thanked Finney in her Oscar speech after winning for the same film, saying she shared the award with him.

"Sam Mendes has done a really great job, and I think Daniel Craig, the third time he's played the part, really fits the jacket snugly and has a nice edge to him", the actor told the MEN.

Finney managed to avoid the all-consuming celebrity that often accompanied big-screen fame. It began an era of his career where he would really embrace his age, playing Winston Churchill in The Gathering Storm (and earning a BAFTA, Golden Globe and Emmy for it), a dying storyteller in Tim Burton's Big Fish, and an expert thief in Ocean's 12.

His more recent films include The Bourne Ultimatum (2007), The Bourne Legacy (2012), and the James Bond film Skyfall, out the same year.
