Refugee footballer will not be extradited to Bahrain

Al-Araibi has been in a Bangkok jail since November, after being arrested while on honeymoon due to an Interpol notice issued at Bahrain's request.

Mr Araibi was reportedly freed at 3.55pm on Monday and was expected to return to Australia on Monday night.

Bahraini Hakeem al-Araibiwill fly home to Australia on Monday.

Bahrain has now dropped an extradition request made to Thailand, paving the way for Al-Araibi to return to Australia.

Bahrain footballer Hakeem al-Araibi is brought to the Criminal Court in Bangkok on Feb 4 for an extradition request from Bahrain.

Al-Araibi plays for Pascoe Vale FC in Melbourne.

He was convicted of vandalizing a police station during 2011 anti-government protests in Bahrain and sentenced in absentia after he fled. He was detained upon his arrival in Bangkok in November while on a holiday at the request of Bahrain relayed through Interpol - from the global police body's Australian office.

Bahrain has denied allegations of torture and said Mr Araibi is a fugitive who should be returned.

Morrison said he was "pleased" with the outcome and thanked the Thai government, as well as Australian football identity Craig Foster for his advocacy on the case.

The 25-year-old was detained in Bangkok more than two months ago for alleged vandalism offences in his native Bahrain.

"Fifa is committed to protecting human rights".

Al-Araibi has said he was blindfolded and had his legs beaten while he was held in Bahrain previously.

Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it had no comment on the case. She said "a great deal" of work had gone on behind the scenes.
