Sen. McConnell: Green New Deal Vote Will Put Dems on Record

The upcoming vote - which has not yet been scheduled - will "give everybody an opportunity to go on record", McConnell said. It drew praise from several 2020 contenders angling for support from the party's base. Rather than fall for the ploy, Democrats voted "present", except for red-state Democratic senators who voted no. "I really don't like their policy of taking away your auto, of taking away your airplane rights, of 'let's hop a train to California, ' of you're not allowed to own cows anymore!"

McConnell is eager to get Senate Democrats on the record about their support for the resolution introduced last week by Senator Ed Markey of MA and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of NY.

Almost all of the Democratic senators angling for the party's presidential nomination are co-sponsoring the non-binding resolution, including Kamala Harris of California, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, Kirsten Gillibrand of NY and Cory Booker of New Jersey.

Sen. Ted Cruz called the "Green New Deal" a sign of "just how nutty Democrats are getting", telling donors in a conference call Tuesday night that it's a "kooky" approach that would entail bans on cars, planes, trains and cattle. As Vox's Matthew Yglesias points out, "They ran this exact play on the Sanders Medicare for All bill" in the Senate in 2017, when Montana Republican Steve Daines pasted a Democratic single-payer insurance plan onto one of the failed Obamacare repeal attempts. Ed Markey of MA, the proposal calls for dramatic steps to virtually eliminate US greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

"The sun is setting on the dirty energy of the past". It also includes non-environmental measures created to address issues like economic insecurity, housing and universal health care. The ambitious proposal met a reality check Tuesday as California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced he's abandoning a plan to build a high-speed rail line between Los Angeles and San Francisco, a project with an estimated cost that has ballooned to $77 billion.

"This is now a voting issue across the country", Markey said.

Problems in the Democratic rollout of the proposal have further fueled the Republican attacks.

"I would just say that it's going to be crucially important for us to recognize and understand when we outlaw plane travel, we outlaw gasoline, we outlaw cars, I think actually probably the entire USA military, because of the Green New Deal, that we are able to explain to our constituents and to people all across this country what that really means", Cheney said. He added that the plan would "shut down American energy" and "a little thing called air travel". Ocasio-Cortez has subsequently described the fact sheet, which has been deleted from her website, as a "draft".

The resolution is expected to fail in the Senate.

Almost all of the Democratic senators running for president have thrown their support behind the Green New Deal, but the bill does not enjoy the same success among the rest of Democratic senators, with only 11 of 47 supporting the deal, according to a report from CNBC.

Other Republicans are prepared to watch with glee. Schumer asked reporters. "What are they going to put forward?"
