Spotify Warns Free Users with Ad Blockers Will Be Banned

Through an email on February 7 the music and podcast streaming platform announced to its users that the Terms and Conditions will be updated with the changes coming into effect on March 1. In instances where it has found a free user skipping ads, the company has historically sent out warnings to users and, if they continued to use ad-blockers, deactivated accounts until the blockers were removed. With that in mind, you can understand why the company's user guidelines now say that "circumventing or blocking advertisements in the Spotify Service, or creating or distributing tools designed to block advertisements in the Spotify Service" is not permitted. So, If you're invested in your Spotify account for whatever reason, now's probably a good time to remove or disable ad blockers functions that specifically target the service.

What do you think of Spotify's new terms of service? At last report, Spotify has about 95 million free subscribers as of the 1st quarter of 2018.

The firm has always been anti-ad blockers. Rather, cheating free users who get caught will simply immediately lose their account with no way to get it back.

In March, The Verge reported that 2 million users were dodging ads with certain blocking apps and accounts. A proportion of these free users turn to ad blockers, and this is something Spotify has been increasingly trying to clamp down on.

Spotify users should check their emails for new terms of service agreement from Spotify.

Spotify is looking to expand as well with its recent acquisitions of Anchor and Gimlet Media as part of its effort to build its own podcasting network.
