The last five years were the hottest ever, NASA and NOAA declare

NASA scientists announced Wednesday that the Earth's average surface temperature in 2018 was the fourth highest in almost 140 years of record-keeping and a continuation of an unmistakable warming trend, The New York Times reports.

Scientists with NASA and NOAA will discuss the Earth's 2018 global temperatures and climate conditions on February 6, 2018.

The UN's World Meterological Organisation said in November that 2018 was set to be the fourth warmest year in recorded history, stressing the urgent need for action to rein in runaway planetary warming.

NASA, in a statement, said the past five years are, collectively, the warmest years in the modern record.

"The key message is that the planet is warming, " said Gavin Schmidt, director of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies. Scientists say that if the world is to avoid the worst consequences of climate change, global temperatures must not rise by more than two degrees Celsius compared with pre-industrial levels. The long-term trends are extremely robust. According to scientific consensus, this warming has been driven in large part by increased emissions into the atmosphere of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases caused by human activities.

The year just past also saw 14 weather and climate related disasters with losses of $1 billion or more, which totaled about $91 billion in damages. NASA, for instance, ranked 2015 as the third-warmest year on record while NOAA found it was 2017.

NASA and NOAA climate scientists said even though 2018 was a tad cooler than the three previous years that's mostly due to random weather variations. But in the long-term, the two agencies strongly agree on the pace and trajectory of global warming.

Since the 1880s, the average global surface temperature has risen about 2 degrees Fahrenheit (1 degree Celsius).

NASA and NOAA independently monitor the Earth's surface temperatures and changes based on observations of both land areas and oceans, using a network of satellites scattered in Earth orbit.

It was also an expensive year for natural disasters.

"The long-term temperature trend is far more important than the ranking of individual years, and that trend is an upward one", Petteri Taalas, secretary general of the World Meteorological Organization, told The Guardian.

In fact, 2018 was the wettest year in the last 35 years.
