Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games medals to be made from recycled electronic devices

Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games medals to be made from recycled electronic devices

A project was started in 2017 to collect enough electronic waste, including old smartphones and laptops, to implement the scheme.

It will be the first time the Japanese capital has hosted the Games since 1964.

India last won a gold medal in the Olympics during the 2008 games in Beijing.

Stations located at post offices and other public buildings collected other electronic devices.

"Thanks to the huge levels of support from the public and companies across Japan and from national and global athletes, it is estimated that the remaining amounts of metals required to manufacture all Olympic and Paralympic medals can be extracted from the devices already donated", Tokyo 2020 said in the press statement. While the target for bronze and silver has been attained, the gold remains bit short.

All Olympic and Paralympic medals can be made from devices already donated, the committee is estimating, with nationwide collection scheduled to stop on 31 March. At the Rio Olympics in 2016, recycled metals were used for medals but for less than 30 per cent of gold and silver.

The Tokyo Olympic Committee will unveil its 2020 medal design sometime this summer.

The organizing committee said municipal authorities had already collected 47,488 tons of junked devices by November, roughly 19 months after the project was launched with targets of 30.3kg of gold, 4,100kg of silver and 2,700kg of bronze. "The elite athletes are being looked after by a different set of professional people so that there is no bureaucracy", Rathore, an olympic silver-medallist in double-trap shooting, said.
