1st All-Female Spacewalk Scrapped Over Safety Concerns, Not Sexism

The first all-female spacewalk in history has been CANCELLED, due to a lack of suitable spacesuits. Women would have also performed crucial work on the ground; Mary Lawrence and Kristen Facciol were set to serve as lead flight director and lead spacewalk flight controller, respectively, supporting McClain and Koch from NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston. It takes time to properly prep a spacesuit and only one medium suit was ready to go, so Koch will wear it on Friday. The spacewalk was supposed to include astronaut Anne McClain, but there was an issue with the fit and availability of her spacesuit.

"Shouldn't NASA's sizing be more specialised than a box of free T-shirts?"

Here's hoping NASA takes OT up on its offer and McClain is given another chance to bust a zero-gravity glass ceiling.

A spacewalk, also known as extravehicular activity (EVA), is a broad term that applies to any time an astronaut exits a vehicle while in space.

There have been 213 space walks outside the ISS since 1998 for the purposes of maintenance, repairs, testing of new equipment or science experiments, according to NASA. But due to a lack of appropriately-sized spacesuits now at the International Space Station, that major milestone for women in space won't be reached this week after all. And for the most part, "spacewalks have been. conducted by male astronauts, with the help of some female crewmembers", as Shaiann Frazier previously reported for NBC News. While Koch has always worn a size medium during underwater spacewalk training back on Earth, McClain had trained in both a medium and a large. After a spacesuit fit check on March 4, McClain tweeted that she had grown 2 inches (5 centimeters) since she launched into space.

In her tweet, Hillary urged to "Make another suit".

The space agency has not stated when it will try again to make an all-female spacewalk happen.

"We believe an all-female spacewalk is inevitable", Schierholz told The Post.
