Air Canada abandons 2019 forecasts amid 737 Max groundings

Air Canada abandons 2019 forecasts amid 737 Max groundings

Along with the flight data recorder, the information will be evaluated by Ethiopian authorities, teams from Boeing, and USA and European Union aviation safety authorities to try to determine the cause of the crash.

According to the flight data recorder, the pilots of Lion Air Flight 610 struggled to control the aircraft as the MCAS repeatedly pushed the nose down after takeoff.

Boeing Co plans to release upgraded software for its 737 MAX in a week to 10 days, sources familiar with the matter said.

The Ethiopian Airlines pilots reported similar difficulties before their aircraft plunged to the ground.

Air Canada was forced to cancel 52 flights as of Thursday afternoon because of the decision to ground the Max 8s. Despite pausing shipments, it continued to produce at full speed at its factory near Seattle.

Engineers had to find out what the system was doing on the Lion Air flight, how the system's commands appeared to pilots, what changes needed to be made to software, manuals and training, and the best way to make those changes.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) stands behind the process which relies heavily on Boeing.

France's Bureau of Enquiry and Analysis for Civil Aviation Safety (BEA) said on Saturday that its experts had downloaded data from the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) of the Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft that crashed minutes after takeoff from Addis Ababa last week.

And Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger - noted for his safe landing of a damaged plane on the Hudson River in NY without loss of life - questioned the lack of experience of the Ethiopian first officer on the doomed flight, who reportedly had only 200 hours of flight time. The pilots were locked in a battle for control of the aircraft as it climbed and dropped by hundreds of feet.

"Break break, request back to home", the Times quoted the pilot as saying just prior to the crash.

In Ethiopia, relatives have been visiting the charred and debris-strewn field to pay last respects. The victims of the crash came from 35 countries.

Diplomats fear trucks and excavators at the site could be destroying vital evidence, while some policemen have been taking selfies inside the security cordon.

"More than 24 hours is a problem for us".

"We are now stuck in the same place, the same as Monday". Elsewhere, a potential new Chinese order for more than 100 jets worth well over $10 billion was put in doubt. "They didn't expect the Ethiopians to lose their jet while all this was going on", said Alan Diehl, a former investigator for the National Transportation Safety Board.
