Alleged Gambino Crime Family Boss Frank Cali Shot Dead Outside Home

The person who whacked Francesco "Franky Boy" Cali appears to have lured the Gambino crime boss out of his Staten Island home by smashing into the mobster's auto, law enforcement sources said Thursday.

The last Mafia boss to be rubbed out in New York City was Gambino don "Big Paul" Castellano, assassinated at Gotti's direction while getting out of a black limousine outside a high-end Manhattan steakhouse in 1985.

According to the New York Daily News, Cali was shot six times in the chest by a someone in a blue pickup truck on Hilltop Terrace at around 9:15 p.m.

He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

A caller to 911 said that as many as seven shots were heard, but police have not reported how many times Cali was hit. Cali served a 16-month prison sentence for the crime.

John Gotti, who organised the hit, then took power at the helm of the Gambino family.

The Gambino family was once among the most powerful criminal organizations in the US, but federal prosecutions in the 1980s and 1990s sent Gotti and other top leaders to prison, diminishing its reach.

According to local media in NY, he took the helm of the Gambino family in 2015, replacing Domenico Cefalu.

"The Gambino crime family during Castellano's reign was the largest criminal organization in the USA, with law enforcement estimating it had some 250 "'made" members" and "more than 550 lower-ranking "associate' members".

Weiss also adds that it's unlikely that the assassination was organized by any other organized crime family that may still operate in New York City as many have aimed to stay out of the limelight in recent years.

But federal prosecutors held that Cali was involved in a number of other crime schemes, including operating illegal gambling machines in Brooklyn establishments and snatching profits from an annual Italian Feast festival in the borough.

Affluent Todt Hill is renowned for its crime connections. "Very surprising, but I guess old habits die hard". In October, reputed Bonanno associate Sylvester Zottola was fatally shot while waiting for a cup of coffee at a McDonald's drive-thru in the Bronx.

He then allegedly returned to the scene of the crime hours later to grieve with the older man's family.
