Apple's in-house AirPods rival spotted in iOS 12.2

Apple's in-house AirPods rival spotted in iOS 12.2

9to5Mac reported on Monday that it has dug up imagery hidden in the freshly released iOS 12.2 update of what appears to be a new version of Apple's Beats Powerbeats headphones, dubbed Powerbeats Pro, that really are wireless.

Recently, we have seen rumors about the launch of a truly wireless version of Powerbeats headphones. In the latest update of iOS 12, 9to5Mac has found some renders of the upcoming wireless audio product by Beats in iOS 12.2.

The design is almost identical to the current Powerbeats3, but with the wires removed entirely.

Although the Powerbeats Pro earphones aren't as slender or compact as AirPods, these feature traditional Beats earhooks (like the other Powerbeats earphones) and have different sized eartips so can provide a more bespoke and secure fit for exercise. The case will presumably provide additional battery and charging capabilities for the Powerbeats Pro earphones, although if the new version can achieve the same 12-hour battery life as the Powerbeats3, in-case charging may not be almost as important as it is for Apple's AirPods.

The brand's iOS12.2 came out this week and it contains animations and images of wireless Powerbeats headphones similar in style to the Powerbeats3 design.

Apple might launch the Powerbeats Pro in White and Black colors. It may also feature wireless charging and be water resistant.

Respected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has predicted that Apple will add reverse wireless charging to the next set of iPhones, allowing AirPods to charge on the back of the phone. The report also mentioned that the new Powerbeats will include the same upgraded H1 chip as the second-generation AirPods, as well as "Hey Siri" support. The complete details along with the pricing and availability will be known on the launch day.
