Backed forces capture suspects involved in bombing that killed 4 Americans

The official said earlier the SDF had seized full control of a camp at Baghouz where Islamic State militants had been holed up, though the operation was not yet over.

More than 1,300 combatants have been killed and about 520 captured in special operations by the SDF since the battle for Baghouz started, Gabriel said.

A spokesman for US -backed forces fighting the Islamic State group in Syria says they have captured a group of suspects involved in a January bombing that killed four Americans in a town in northern Syria.

Mustafa Bali, a spokesman for the SDF, said late on Tuesday that clashes with the militants at the Euphrates were continuing "in several pockets".

A US-backed militia in Syria said thousands of people are still believed to be inside the last ISIL enclave as it sought to flush out fighters with air attacks and shelling.

"This is not a victory announcement, but a significant progress in the fight against Daesh", said Mustafa Bali, a media official with the US -backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on Twitter, using an Arabic acronym for Islamic State. Still, fighters from the force were starting to celebrate anyway.

It said that at talks with Assad, the Russian defense minister had discussed fight against terrorism in Syria, security for the Middle East and the post-conflict settlement.

"This is the slow unraveling of Baghouz, the last ISIS holdout, whose capture will mark the end of the group's territory, which once spanned hundreds of miles across Iraq and Syria", NPR's Ruth Sherlock reports for our Newscast unit.

Kurds make up around 15 percent of Syria's population, and the SDF is the second force after the Syrian army, seizing around 30 percent of the country's territories.

In the last two weeks, many Islamic State militants appeared to be among those evacuating.

"Do you think the displacement of the weak and poor out of Baghouz will weaken the Islamic State?". Commanders say they don't know how many more may still be left, hiding in tunnels beneath the war-scarred village.

"This is not a victory announcement, but a significant progress in the fight against Daesh", Bali said.

The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the blast which struck outside a popular restaurant in Manbij in January that killed at least 16 people, including two US service members and two American civilians.

Bali, in a separate Twitter post Tuesday, said the Syrian Democratic Forces captured a group of suspects involved in a January suicide bombing that killed four Americans in the northern town of Manbij.

On Monday night, ISIS released an audio recording from its spokesman, known only as Abu Hassan Al Muhajir, saying the group would remain strong.
