BRILLIANT Federer concedes 5 games to Edmund in Indian Wells

Former champions Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal edged closer to a blockbuster semi-final showdown at the Indian Wells Masters yesterday morning (Singapore time) with brisk fourth-round wins.

Following both their victories, the two champions now increased their odds to face each other in the semifinals to fill fans with excitement.

Federer dispatched British player Kyle Edmund 6-1, 6-4 in just over an hour, while Nadal scored a 6-3, 6-4 win over qualifier Filip Krajinovic.

The victor of that match will face either 18th-seeded Frenchman Gael Monfils or unseeded German Philipp Kohlschreiber - who stunned world number one Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-4 on Tuesday.

Afterwards, in a clear indication of her confidence, Andreescu said: "For me, the sky's the limit".

It marks her eighth win against a top 50 player this year alone.

Federer, a 20-time Grand Slam champion who captured his 100th career title at Dubai last month, overcame breezy conditions on stadium court and a hungry Hurkacz - a 22-year-old ranked 67th in the world who was playing in his first Masters 1000 quarter-final and just the second quarter-final of his career. Maybe because of the conditions, [it was] windier out there today.

"If I play Rafa there's extra energy in the building - there's always a lot on the line", he said. "That's where I got my good feeling and my good tennis and also the good physical health back".

World number four Roger Federer needed under an hour to defeat fellow Swiss Stan Wawrinka 6-3 6-4 and will next face Briton Kyle Edmund, who defeated Radu Albot in straight sets earlier in the day.

"It will be amusing that somebody other than Novak is still in", he said of his famous countryman.

Kecmanovic, who gained entry to the second round when fifth-seeded Kevin Anderson withdrew with an elbow injury, is in his first ATP quarter-final.

His rival in the quarterfinals will be Russian Karen Khachanov who beat American John Isner 6-4 and 7-6 on Wednesday. "I hope I can get there, but I am not going to underestimate Hurkacz".

The 13th seed will square off against France's Gael Monfils, a 6-0 6-2 victor over Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber, in the quarter-finals on Thursday.
