Browns get DE Vernon from Giants

In an interview with 92.3 The Fan in Cleveland, NFL Network reporter Aditi Kinkhabwala poured cold water all over the intensity of the trade rumor and excitement that gripped Browns fans earlier this week. With free agency lacking a ton of edge rushers, the move makes sense for the Browns and Vernon, who could see his production rise as a secondary rusher to Cleveland star defensive end, Myles Garrett. The Giants are receiving veteran guard Kevin Zeitler in the deal, reports said.

In exchange, the Browns are sending guard Kevin Zeitler to NY. Vernon, who has had some injury issues, spent his first four with the Miami Dolphins. In 39 games with the Giants, Vernon had 130 tackles and 22 sacks. Vernon has 51 sacks in seven seasons, including seven past year when he was named a Pro Bowler in NY.

By trading Vernon, the Giants will have to eat $8 million toward the salary cap next season while saving $11.5 million.

Apparently, the Browns needed to wait until they could wish Zeitler a happy birthday.

Almost three years to the day after signing him to a significant free agent contract, the New York Giants are trading defensive end Olivier Vernon. In taking him on now, the Browns have Vernon under contract for two years.

Zeitler was a first-round draft pick by the Cincinnati Bengals in 2012.
