China’s soldiers to get a massive advantage as scientists create SUPER VISION

Seeing in infrared light essentially allows the subject to see heat sources and would allow soldiers to take on unsafe missions at night WITHOUT the need of night vision googles.

Humans and other mammals are limited to seeing a range of wavelengths of light called visible light, which includes the wavelengths of the rainbow.

"So, we believe this technology will also work in human eyes, not only for generating supervision but also for therapeutic solutions in human red color vision deficits", said Dr. Xue. These findings could lead to advancements in human infrared vision technologies, including potential applications in civilian encryption, security, and military operations.

"When light enters the eye and hits the retina, the rods and cones - or photoreceptor cells - absorb the photons with visible light wavelengths and send corresponding electric signals to the brain", said study author Gang Han in a statement.

Because infrared wavelengths are too long to be detected by their photoreceptors, mice do not perceive them. After the experiment, the rodents were able to see in the night for as long as 10 weeks with no significant side effects.

To test how well the nanoparticles worked, the researchers carried out a number of experiments to determine if the eyes of the mice were picking up infrared light.

Described in a paper in the journal Cell, the nanotechnology works inside the eye, binding with retinal cells and translating faint light that the mice's eyeballs couldn't detect into electrical signals that they could.

Chinese and United States scientists have performed a successful experiment giving mice the ability to see infrared light after injecting them with nanoparticles, and they suggest human vision could be modified in the same way, allowing people to detect a wider spectrum of colors. A series of tests were created to verify the full capability of identifying NIR light by the tested-upon mice, through the presence of an exceptionally low power NIR LED lamp light to activate the nanoparticles.

When the light hits the retina, they capture the longer infrared wavelengths and emit shorter wavelengths within the visible range.

Researchers found that those critters receiving injections showed unconscious physical signs of infrared light detection (like pupils constricting), while the control group didn't respond.

Sometimes, there were side effects in which cloudy corneas appeared, but disappeared within a week.

"In the future, we think there may be room to improve the technology with a new version of organic-based nanoparticles, made of FDA-approved compounds, that appear to result in even brighter infrared vision", says Han.

In the initial trials, mice were injected with photoreceptor cells known as rods and cones.

A recent scientific breakthrough made jointly by scientists in China and the United States will enable mammals to see in the dark, and also serve as the basis for fixing human beings color blindness.
