Facebook recovering from global outage

In addition to Facebook, irate users noted that the outage likewise affected Instagram and WhatsApp.

"We're aware that some people are now having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps". Facebook said it was working to resolve the issue but didn't announce the fix until Thursday.

The Menlo Park, California-based company, which gets a vast majority of its revenue from advertising, told Bloomberg that it was still investigating the overall impact "including the possibility of refunds for advertisers".

Facebook Apologizes for Outages, Says It Has Resolved ‘Server Configuration’ Error That Led to Access Problems

The outage appeared to be abating early Thursday.

DownDetector website - one of the internet's most used sources of numbers on outages - showed the number of complaints had peaked at more than 12,000, gradually falling to about 180 as of 11 a.m. ET on Thursday.

Facebook took to its Twitter account Wednesday to assure users that the outage wasn't due to a "distributed denial of service" attack, or DDoS, meaning the disturbance wasn't the result of hacker attacks. Reuters was not immediately able to verify those claims and the company declined to comment beyond the statement on resumption of services. But the company said Thursday that it has fixed the problem and that its systems are "recovering". In any case, a contact within Telegram confirmed to TechCrunch's colleagues what was already quite obvious: the merit of this sudden growth is the aforementioned problems ("These outages always drive new users"), but is partly attributed to the will of a growing number of users to distance themselves from Facebook. The federal investigation is the latest bad news coming from the company's data privacy scandals. It's believed to be the biggest interruption ever suffered by the social network.
